'I have spoken to a number of different recruiters and staffing agents and I even did some technical work for a recruiter early in my career so I know that they are definitely not all alike - the difference in quality can be significant. Many of them are playing a numbers game by sending out hundreds of (badly-matched) job descriptions to candidates where it's clear they don't understand or care what the client or the candidate are really looking for. Others will throw you out on interviews without any background or guidance, and still others don't understand how to manage the hiring process. Several have barely spoken English - which definitely makes it hard to be sure that they are putting you out on a quality interview. If you only see this side of recruiting, you start to lose faith in the profession! But I know from experience that a good recruiter can be tremendously helpful to your company or career. The trick is finding that needle in a haystack.
